I have heard about Maya and seen bits of her work.
As I began to learn more about Maya I just did not want to stop reading of her, her work, her quotes, her messages and teachings.
She brings emotion and real life to everything she talks to us about.
Her words make me want to dance, to move and to empower myself and my daughter.
If I could achieve just a fraction of what she has that would mean success.
Maya Angelou, born April 4, 1928 – May 28, 2014.
Maya was an American poet, memoirist, civil rights activist and multi passionate entrepreneur.
At 7 Maya was sexually abused by her mother’s boyfriend and only shared her fears and trauma with her brother. She became mute for over 5 years.
The man turned up dead and Maya believed that it was her words that had caused his death.
She published seven autobiographies, three books of essays, several books of poetry, and was credited with a list of plays, movies, and television shows spanning over 50 years. She received dozens of awards and more than 50 honorary degrees.
Multi Passionate is an understatement for Maya, she became a poet and writer after a series of occupations as a young adult, including fry cook, sex worker, nightclub dancer and performer, actress and journalist. She was an actor, writer, director, and producer of plays, movies, and public television programs. The list goes on.
She was active in the Civil Rights Movement and worked with Martain Luther King Jr.
Maya is a huge inspiration of mine and her quotes and work is recognized across the globe.
I would love to think that I can inspire my daughter to live the way Maya inspires me to live my life.
