The Real Reason People Don’t Start Coaching (and How You Can Fix It)
If you’ve ever thought about becoming a coach, you probably felt excited… but also a little overwhelmed. Coaching seems incredible in theory. Helping people, making an impact, building a meaningful career, but then you wonder:
“What do I actually do in a coaching session?”
And if you don’t know, it’s easy to put it off.
That’s the number one reason most people never start coaching. They think they need years of experience, advanced techniques, or a complex toolkit.
Here’s the truth: you don’t.
Coaching Isn’t About Giving Advice. That would be mentoring.
I remember when I first started teaching coaching within my NLP Practitioner & Breakthrough Coaching courses. One student came to me and said:
“Becky, I have no idea how to actually format a coaching session. If I tried to do one now, I’d have no idea what to do.”
That stuck with me. Even though coaching was already embedded in the course, and within everything I teach. I thought that perhaps it may be better to have it stripped right back. Coaching as a stand alone module.
So that is what I did. I seperated our coaching sections from the NLP, and I created what has now become the Life Coaching Diploma. It’s a standalone program that teaches you coaching skills in a simple, practical way so you can confidently guide clients, even as a beginner. With no expereince of coaching. What. So. Ever.
The Simple 5-Step Coaching Session
Here’s the core of what I teach in the diploma: a simple, repeatable structure that works every time. So that you know where you are in a coaching session at all times. You can guide a client, or individual through this format and never be worried about what to say, and where to lead the conversation next.
1️⃣ Check-In + Set the Intention
Start the session by helping your client define what they want to get out of it.
Ask questions like:
-
“What would make this session useful for you today?”
-
“What’s the goal you’d like to focus on?”
This step gives clarity, focus, and direction for both of you.
2️⃣ Explore the Challenge
Next, uncover what’s really holding them back. Open-ended questions work best:
-
“What’s stopping you right now?”
-
“How does this make you feel?”
-
“What would need to change for you to feel unstuck?”
This step helps your client uncover the real issue, not just the surface-level problem.
3️⃣ Shift the Perspective
Once the challenge is clear, guide your client to see new possibilities.
Ask questions like:
-
“If that obstacle wasn’t in the way, what could you do?”
-
“What strengths or resources do you already have to solve this?”
The goal here is to help them see options and solutions they couldn’t see on their own.
4️⃣ Clarify the Next Steps
Now turn insight into action. Ask:
-
“What’s the very next thing you can do to move forward?”
-
“What’s one small step you could take today?”
By the end of this step, your client leaves with a clear action plan, momentum, and confidence.
5️⃣ Close the Session with Confidence
Finally, wrap up in a way that reinforces progress and builds trust:
-
Summarise the key insights
-
Affirm the client’s choices and capabilities
-
Reinforce the next steps
This is what leaves a client feeling empowered, supported, and capable. It keeps them coming back for more sessions.
Why This Works for Beginners

That’s exactly what the Life Coaching Diploma gives you. It’s:
✔ Self-study, so you can go at your own pace
✔ Accredited and certified, giving you credibility
✔ Beginner-friendly, no prior experience required
✔ Packed with practical tools you can start using immediately
Student Story: From Overwhelmed to Confident
One of my students shared this with me after completing the Life Coaching Diploma:
“I had no idea how to support my team at work. Even going through your course I began to feel more and more confident and started implimenting it without even realising! I mean – look at me! It has been a total game-changer. Thank you.”
Stories like this happen all the time and that’s the power of learning the basics properly. When you know the framework, you can focus on connecting, guiding, and supporting your clients, rather than worrying about what to say next. I use this with my kids! It doesn’t only help you in coaching, it helps you to be a better communicator and more effective at having conversations overall.
