1) THE NEWS IS HELPFUL IN SMALL DOSES, BUT MOSTLY IT IS NEGATIVE – AVOID AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE
When we watch the news we program our minds to seek out more bad news. This is just the way our minds work. If we want to see roses in the garden, we don’t go planting tulips and expect to see roses.
2) MY MIND IS PROGRAMMED TO BACK UP WHAT IT BELIEVES, WHEN I FEED IT GOOD NEWS, THAT IS WHAT I WILL SEE MORE OF
What we believe we will see, and our beliefs are not always true or correct. They are our beliefs based on our own version of reality, which is different to everyone around us.
3) IF I HAVE NEGATIVE THOUGHTS, I HAVE THE POWER TO CHANGE THEM
When we feel down or negative we do have to honour these feelings and thoughts. Once we do that we can then move on from them and support ourselves to feel better.
4) JOURNALING MY THOUGHTS ON PAPER IS HELPFUL TO CLEAR MY MIND
Journaling is a powerful way to let go of all of the self-talk and release it on to the paper. There is no right or wrong way to journal. Get a blank piece of paper, a pen and write whatever it is you are thinking, you can even start with talking about you actively journaling and why you decided to begin. The beauty of journaling is that it frees up your mind and will take a weight out of your mind and into the paper.
5) WHAT I BELIEVE I WILL SEE – WHEN MY MIND BELIEVES SOMETHING IT WILL THEN SEARCH FOR THE ‘FACTS’ TO BACK THAT UP
Our brains are wired with confirmation bias. This is when our brains look for all the events happening outside of ourselves to back up the reasons why we are ‘right’. Being aware of this, and knowing that our beliefs are not always right and are often different from those around us is key to supporting ourselves here.
