A lot of people in the community said they’re struggling with getting the things that they want, they’re struggling with focusing on positive things, they’re struggling with feeling negative, that they’re feeling anxious and uncertain about the things that are happening and what is going on. Understanding why it is important to be clear on what we focus on and understand why our brains work the way they work and how our brains operate and how our minds work will really help.

Perception is projection. When we have a perception in our minds, in our brains, we project that perception out into the world. How do we gain our perception? Through the events that happen around us, through everything that happens externally in our lives. Events don’t have to be really big or something special. It’s literally every single thing that is happening in your life, just like me now writing this.

What happens is we filter these external events into our brains through our senses, visual, auditory, kinesthetics. We fill the information into our brains and we then delete and start to generalize it based on our model of the world, based on our experiences, based on the events that happen around us, the decisions that we’ve made, the decisions that we see other people make, our values, our belief systems. We then create an internal perception in our brains, an internal perception of what is going on in that event and then project that out into the world.

So, when it comes to negativity and anxious feelings around things or feeling negative about things, it really comes down to the internal perception that we have in our minds that we’re projecting out into the world. From there, we create our behaviors, which creates our outcomes, which then creates our results in life.

Everyday we have so many information going on around us. As long as we walk into our room, there are hundreds and thousands of pieces of information and then comes all the digital side of things – the media, the radio, TV, social media and everything else.

There is an estimated 11 million pieces of information directed to us constantly but we can only process 126 pieces of information. Imagine 11 million straws dropping from a ceiling and all you can grasp is just 126 pieces of them. It’s the same thing with the amount of information that we can pay attention to any time, that’s why it’s really important to be focusing on the information that you are being given to, focusing on the information that’s gonna support you to get the things that you really want, to live the life that you want, to feel the way that you want. We can do this by getting really intentional about how you want you to feel, on what we want, on the outcome that we want.

To be able to feel what you want to feel, what information do you need to focus on?

1. Social media. When we think about social media, it’s place that’s not always positive. There are couple of things that we can do, we can mute the people who may not make you feel the way you want to feel. You can also stop going on social media as much as you may be at the moment. I, years ago deleted social media apps from my phone because I found this automatic behavior of checking social media constantly which was really unhealthy. So, I deleted the apps and that really supported me on the things that I need to focus on because I realize in my personal experience that social media as being part of the 11 million bits was too much as the straws I was grasping at.

2. News and the media. The news and newspapers make money from telling bad stories. We have something in our brains that’s called confirmation bias, a built-in system to look for bad news because of the way our brains are wired. When we watch the news, our brains will naturally pick up information from them and they will become part of the 126 pieces of information that we are focusing on. Remember that we need to eliminate the things that won’t support us in achieving the things that we want.

How can you focus on the 126 pieces of information that you want to grasp on?

3. Journaling. Journal on the things that you feel at the moment, the things that you want to achieve, and the things that you want to feel. Remember that there’s no right or wrong way to journal. It’s all about really getting all the thoughts, the things in your head out into the piece of paper. If you ever feel overwhelmed or unsure about what to do, journaling will help.
