Some tips on how to communicate in your relationship whilst in lockdown!

I thought I would also share with you the full comments I gave, as this may help with being in lockdown right now with others!  But feel free to read the whole article on their website.

What difficulties might couples who don’t usually work from home/ spend all their time at home together face?
It can be hard spending a lot of time with anyone, especially when it’s your partner and you are so close as you don’t tend to hold back voicing your opinions when they are getting on your nerves. All of a sudden spending all your time with your spouse can put a strain on your relationship. The important thing is to ensure you communicate properly and be open and clear when talking through what you need to do and work out a plan together.

Are there couples out there that manage it just fine?
There are lots of couples who work together and we have noticed a huge trend in women owned businesses retiring their husbands or bringing their partners into their business with them. It works really well for some of them, as long as their are clear boundaries on who is doing what and each other’s domains then things will run smoothly. It is important to always have clear set job descriptions and domains when working in any business and the same applies in this case.

What tips/ advice would you offer couples who are suddenly thrown into this situation?
Set clear boundaries. Be really clear on who is doing what and when.
Agree to disagree. Sometimes we don’t always agree on things, and that is ok. Get to grips with the fact that you may not agree on everything and that is ok.
Communicate properly. If you think something say it, don’t let your thoughts muster in your mind be open and honest about how you feel and what you need.

What tips would you offer if they don’t have much space at home?
Take regular breaks to get out and walk outdoors in open spaces. Take it in turns to do the coffee breaks and understand that you are both going to be feeling the pressure at the moment so don’t be hard on yourself or each other.

What if they have kids?
This can be a tricky one as usually the mother always feels it is her responsibility to make sure the kids are ok. Have the conversation now with your partner and alternate the kids activities if you can. It could be that adjusting your working hours slightly may work, but if you both work the same hours and have the kids full time now too things can get very busy, very quickly. Communicate with your partner about what the plan is and implement it from the get go. Once you understand what is expected from the both of you then you can work together and be productive in such an unsettling time.

Through all of this madness, we also must look at the outcomes of this that will bring us closer together and wake us up as a species. This is a time to really pull together and utilise the time we have to be with our loved ones more than ever. rather than thinking of this as a burden, think about how much you will be brought closer together and how much closer you will become as a result.
